Operations & Production Director

Description

We are looking for an Operations & Production Director to create, develop, and implement an industry-leading approach to construction delivery for the Southern Integrated Delivery (SID) alliance within the Southern Renewals Enterprise (SRE).

The successful candidate will have effective oversight and coordination of the functional delivery activities. You will be required to operate in a matrix management structure coordinating the activities of the SID partners and existing individuals from the current Network Rail structure.

The Operations and Production Director is a member of the Leadership Team and will report into the SID Director.

The South Renewables Enterprise is accountable for the Southern Region’s renewals programme; through a collaborative enterprise model, the SID alliance will deliver the multi-billion-pound investment programme between 2024 and 2034. The SID alliance partners with Network Rail are VolkerFitzpatrick for Buildings and Civils, Octavius for Electrification and Plant, VolkerRail for Track, and Atkins for Signalling.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of core delivery/production strategies including, programme management, engineering management, construction management and the construction to production approach.
  • Leadership of the SID Production capability to create a production delivery organisation that delivers the agreed work bank in line with the Value for Money Statement whilst driving an excellent safety culture.
  • Direct the SID Production capability to ensure bottom-line profitability and Capable Owner affordability to beat P&L targets and associated performance indicators.
  • Ensure the performance of the integrated business processes, systems, and people across the five SID partners; continuously review, develop, and progress to drive a high-performing environment.
  • Ensure all actions, decisions, and behaviours are consistent with best for portfolio and are aligned with the cultural ambitions of the SID Charter and Enterprise aims.
  • Create and maintain effective client relationships and stakeholder management.
  • Maintain advocacy and promotion of the Enterprise with the Project 13 group and the wider industry.
  • Develop the approach the Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) including off-site, near-site and on-site pre-manufacturing opportunities, process improvements and the application of technology.

Requirements

  • Varied and extensive experience, with in-depth knowledge of contracting organisations from tier 1 to tier 4.
  • Experience delivering large, complex projects in senior roles.
  • A successful track record of delivering and managing multi-disciplinary programmes, portfolios, and project teams within major multi-million-pound infrastructure projects as a senior leader.
  • Strong understanding of business operations and construction safety, with significant experience and specialist knowledge of ensuring safety in complex construction environments.
  • Detailed knowledge of the industry as well as the wider macro-economic and business environments.
  • Extensive experience creating and maintaining a high-performing collaborative culture in a portfolio delivery environment.
  • Experience in transformational change, highly communicative and comfortable leading teams through emerging strategies and plans.
  • The ability to act as a strategic thinker whilst maintaining a head for operational detail.
  • Previous senior management roles in a multi-party organisation.
  • Experience in portfolio strategic planning, able to set standards, provide guidance and monitor achievement of the standards.
  • Well-developed leadership communication, negotiation, influencing and interpersonal skills, with the drive and commitment to achieve programme/portfolio-wide objectives.
  • Proven client and supply-chain programme leadership experience.

Desirable Qualifications

  • MBA, degree educated, relevant industry qualification or demonstrable work experience in a similar role.
  • Suitable professional membership in a relevant engineering or construction management discipline. In the event of the post-holder not holding one of these memberships, you will gain this within 12 months of taking up the post.
