Movers and Shakers in Transport & Infrastructure – The Headlines from January 2022

We survived January!

Traditionally one of the busier months of the year for movers and shakers, it’s all systems go as usual for Transport & Infrastructure. We’ve been busier than ever here in our office and this month’s report reflects just that.

Mott MacDonald

Have appointed Cathy Travers to its executive board. She will also continue in her role as managing director of the consultancy’s UK and Europe regional business.

And, Ben Adams has been appointed to the newly created role of Head of Ecosystems. Adams joins Mott MacDonald from Arcadis Gen where he was Ecosystems Director.

Buro Happold

Christian Ulrich joins as Managing Director of its European business. Ulrich will lead the growth of Buro Happold’s geographical reach as well as its service offer and will also become a partner joining their global leadership team. He leaves ARCADIS where he has most recently been COO Central Europe.

Costain

Paula Gough has joined as Key Account Director – National Highways. She leaves ARCADIS where she was Director for the Highways Consultancy business.

Sanjoy Sen and Helen Goulding also join Costain’s Integrated Transport team. Sen joins as Net Zero & Decarbonisation Principal Consultant and Goulding as their Light Rail Specialist.

HS2

Rohan Perin has moved internally to become Project Client Director for EKFB, encompassing the 80km stretch North Portal Chiltern Tunnels to Brackley and the Brackley to South Portal of Long Itchington Wood Green Tunnel. He was previously Project Client Director for the Align JV.

Arcadis

Richard Bonner has been appointed as the new City Executive for the North, encompassing Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and the Northern Powerhouse. Bonner joined Arcadis in 2007 and previously held roles including Chief Operating Officer, City Executive for Bristol, Managing Director – UK Property.

Scottish Water

Douglas Millican is to step down as Scottish Water’s Chief Executive next year, after ten years in the role and 20 years on its board and executive leadership team.  His successor is yet to be appointed.

TfL

Transport for London (TfL) has announced its new, leaner-structured executive team.

Gareth Powell, currently Managing Director of Surface Transport, will become the Chief Customer and Strategy Officer for the whole of TfL. He will also serve as the nominated Deputy Commissioner.

Stuart Harvey, currently Director of Major Projects, will become TfL’s Chief Capital Officer.

Andy Lord, currently Managing Director of London Underground, will become TfL’s new
Chief Operating Officer, bringing all of TfL’s operations together in one place for the first time.

Tricia Wright remains Chief People Officer, Lilli Matson remains Chief Safety, Health and Environment officer, and Howard Carter remains TfL’s General Counsel.

Simon Kilonback, TfL’s CFO, is set to leave in April, with Rachel McLean succeeding him as interim CFO.
Vernon Everitt Managing Director for Customers, Communication & Technology will be leaving after 14 years.

AlixPartners

Stuart Cockburn joins as Director – Enterprise Improvement. He was previously Group Strategy & Development Director at Arriva.

Network Rail

Dave Smale has returned to Network Rail as Head Of Maintenance, Wales and Borders. He leaves Metro Trains Sydney where he has been General Manager Asset Engineering since 2019.

Arriva

Graham Davies joins as Commercial Director for Arriva Bus UK. He leaves Abellio after 8 years with the company, most recently as Head of Digital Transformation.

Hyperoptic

The hyperfast broadband provider, have announced the appointment of Lisa Neale as its MD of Infrastructure. Lisa will report into Dana Tobak, CEO and Founder of Hyperoptic, and will be responsible for delivering the company’s network rollout ambitions.

Greater Anglia

Duncan Wilkins as joined as Head of Engineering Services. He leaves Porterbrook where he has been Head of Fleet Services (South).

Forth Ports

Have announced three new leadership roles. David Webster has been appointed as Director of Energy, he will retain his existing responsibilities as Senior Port Manager responsible for the ports of Dundee and Leith.

Ross McKissock has been appointed as Director of Unitised, responsible for integrating the commercial team on unitised container and trailer cargo across the Group and growing volume. He will retain his responsibilities for running London Container Terminal.

Derek Knox has been appointed as Head of Operations Scottish Ports. He will retain his specific responsibilities as Senior Port Manager at the Port of Grangemouth.

J Murphy & Sons

Former BAM Nuttall Chief Executive Adrian Savory is joining Murphy & Sons Limited as Managing Director of its Major Projects division.

Balfour Beatty

Tom Edgcumbe, Managing Director UK Construction will leave Balfour Beatty after a year at the helm of UKCS England & Wales region to pursue an opportunity outside of the group.

Atkins

Managing Director of UK Transportation, Lizi Stewart has announced that she will be leaving Atkins at the end of this month. Her successor is yet to be announced.

EKFB

EKFB have announced changes to its senior leadership team. Kier’s Helen Samuels is promoted to the role of Managing Director where she will be leading the team currently working on the 80km of the C2 and C3 sections of HS2 Phase One.

Emmanuel Rossignol is promoted to Project Director, taking over from current EKFB Project Director, Peter Bimson, who be retiring later in the year after 25 years at Kier.

Rail Delivery Group

John Backway has been appointed as Head of Central Back Office at the RDG, playing a vital role in delivering digital ticketing services across the rail industry. He leaves Southeastern where he has been Head of Retail.

Lumo

Helen Wylde stepped down as Managing Director of recently launched London – Edinburgh open access operator Lumo on January 4, in order to take up a position outside the rail industry.

FirstGroup

Have appointed Claire Hawkings as an Independent Non-Executive Director. She previously held senior leadership positions with BG Group and British Gas. She is currently a Non-Executive Director of Ibstock, James Fisher & Sons and Defence Equipment & Support.

Ramboll

Have announced the appointments of Trina Minchella as Director of Rail Infrastructure and Helena Turner to lead the High Speed 2 (HS2) account.

Minchella joins from Network Rail where she has most recently been Programme Manager Design Assurance. Turner leaves Jacobs where she was Associate Director.

Van Elle

Robert Walsh has been appointed as Group Services Director. Walsh has been Plant and Transport Director at Svella (formerly nmcn) since 2018.

Balfour Beatty Kilpatrick

Have announced the appointment of Will Smith as Managing Director. He joins Balfour Beatty Kilpatrick from Cumming, a global property and construction consultancy where he held the position of UK and Europe CEO.

Railway Industry Association (RIA)

Richard Carr has joined in the role of Business Engagement Manager for the North of England. Richard’s experience in the sector includes having been owner and Managing Director of rail equipment manufacturer Mechan and having provided consultancy services for the University of Huddersfield and a number of supply chain companies.

WSP

Phil Wells joins the consultancy as Group Director – Stations. He leaves AECOM where he has been since 2015, most recently as Regional Rail Director, London & South East.

They have also appointed Dale Sinclair as Head of Digital Innovation within its property & buildings business. Sinclair joins WSP from AECOM where he has spent the last eight years, most recently as Director of Innovation.

Balfour Beatty Vinci JV

Julian Gatward has moved internally from Taylor Woodrow to join the BBV HS2 JV. He joins as Performance Director Area North.

Morgan Sindall

Carole Bardell-Wise has moved to Morgan Sindall as SHEQ Director. Bardell-Wise leaves Crossrail where she has been since 2019.

McKinsey & Company

Philipp Schartau has joined as an Associate Partner, having been Director at EY – Parthenon since July 2020.

VolkerRail

After almost 33 years with VolkerRail, John Pearson, General Manager – Metro and Rail projects division, has retired. John is one of the companies longest serving employees, having joined VolkerRail on 1 July 1989.

Taziker

Steve Young has been appointed as Group Commercial Director, Young leave Siemens Energy where he was Head of Commercial.

London Southend Airport

Willie McGillivray leaves his post as Chief Operating Officer following 3 years in the role. He is joining McCarthy Stone.
