Check out the latest developments across Transport and Infrastructure. Here’s a roundup of the major contracts awarded in the last month.

Energy

SSEN Transmission and National Grid Electricity Transmission

Tendering has opened for cable and converter station work on the proposed £3.7bn Eastern Green Link 3 powerline connection.

The SSEN Transmission and National Grid Electricity Transmission intend to transfer renewable power generated from Peterhead, Scotland through to Norfolk, England. The EGL3 forms part of SSEN Transmission’s £20bn investment, which aims to upgrade the electricity network in the north of Scotland.

EGL3 is one of four planned HVDC line links across Britain.EGL1 and EGL2 have been consented. EGL3 and EGL4 are in the development andassessment stage.

 

SGN

Clancy has been awarded a new contract by SGN to undertake gas mains and service replacement works in the South of England.

The firm will replace 36km of metallic gas mains with plastic piping across to improve the network’s lifespan and durability.

 

Type One Energy

AtkinsRéalis’ UK-based fusion team has been chosen by Type One Energy to develop a pre-concept design for their proposed fusion pilot plant in Tennessee.

The firm will provide multi-disciplinary engineering services to develop the plant requirements, pre-conceptual facility designs and a preliminary site layout.

 

Highview Power

Highview Power has awarded Spencer Group a £23m contract for work on the UK’s first commercial-scale liquid air long-duration energy storage facility at Trafford Energy Park in Manchester.

Spencer Group will design the layout and deliver the enabling and civil engineering works for the £300m project, which will store surplus electricity from wind and solar energy.

Work is set to begin in late 2024; the plant is expected to be operational in 2026.  

Rail

Transport for London

TfL has appointed Taylor Woodrow to deliver early contractor involvement (ECI) services for the upgrade of Northfield Depot, part of the broader £3bn Piccadilly Line improvement project.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025.

 

 VolkerFitzpatrick has also been awarded a contract to deliver work on the Piccadilly Line Upgrade.

Procured through Pagabo’s civil engineering and infrastructure framework, VolkerFitzpatrick will deliver ECI services to support TfL in developing the concept design of new maintenance facilities at their Cockfosters Depot.  

 

 Arup has been selected to deliver the next stage of design work on the Stratford station redevelopment project.

They will lead a multidisciplinary team, working with firms Grimshaw and 5th Studio, BAM, Corderoy, make:good and Kanda Consulting on the design work.

Arup and the team have partnered with the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC), Newham Council, Network Rail, Places for London and Transport for London for the project.

 

MTR Corporation

Mace has been appointed by MTR Corporation as the Programme Management Partner (PMP) for the delivery of new railway extension projects in Hong Kong.

As PMP, Mace will set up an integrated Project Management Office (PMO) to streamline functions and introduce digital systems to support MTR.  

 

Glasgow City Council and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT)

Glasgow City Council and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) have selected the consultancy partners who will support the investment case for the £15bn Clyde Metro project.

The companies who have been appointed to the £20m framework are AECOM, Arcadis, Jacobs, Mott MacDonald, Systra, Amey, AtkinsRéalis, Cowi, Egis Transport Solutions, Mott MacDonald, WSP, Arup, Jacobs.

The Clyde Metro Multi-Disciplinary Consultancy Framework is split into eight lots; each lot is worth up to £2.5m.

These firms will conduct studies, provide design support, and assist in business case development for the new metro system in the Glasgow City Region.

 

The Government of Victoria

The Terra Verde consortium has been named the preferred bidder for the north tunnels contract on the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East project.

Comprised of Webuild, GS Engineering and Construction Australia, and Bouygues Construction Australia, the consortium will deliver10km of twin tunnels between Glen Waverley and Box Hill.

 

Amtrak

Amtrak has awarded a $1.3bn (£1bn) contract to O&G Industries and Tutor Perini to construct a new movable Connecticut River Bridge, replacing the existing 116-year-old structure.  

Construction is set to begin in late summer/early autumn2024.

 

Hamburger Hochbahn AG

Alstom has signed a framework agreement with Hamburger Hochbahn AG, worth up to €2.8bn(£2.3bn), to deliver up to 374 new metro trains for fully and semi-automated operation.

The firm will also implement its Urbalis CBTC system on the25km fully automated U5 metro line.

 

Water

 

Thames Water

Arup and Binnies have been chosen by Thames Water to deliver engineering designs for a new £1.5bn reservoir near Abingdon, South of Oxford.

Should Thames Water secure government approval for the reservoir, the Arup Binnies JV will be crucial in preparing the DCO submission for the project in 2026.

 

Southern Water

Southern Water has awarded CMDP, a joint venture between Costain and MWH Treatment, a number of multi-million-pound contracts as part of their AMP7 investment programme.

The combined work is valued at £65m and will run until late2025.

The projects will see the joint venture improve the resilience of the local water supply and upgrade wastewater treatment works at Testwood near Southampton, and Burham in Kent.

 

Department for Infrastructure Rivers

Amey has been awarded a five-year contract, worth £30m, by the Department for Infrastructure Rivers, the drainage and flood defence authority for Northern Ireland.

Amey will provide a variety of civil engineering consultancy and specialised services, including the design and implementation of structural improvements to water courses.

 

United Utilities

United Utilities have appointed AtkinsRéalis, Mott MacDonald and Stantec to a £269m framework to provide detailed designs for sustainable water and wastewater solutions across the North West of England.

 

 

Highways

Transport Scotland

Balfour Beatty has been awarded a £184.7m contract to dual the A9 between Tomatin and Moy.

The dualling works between Tomatin and Moy will upgrade9.6km (6 miles) of single carriageway to dual carriageway. When complete, this work will provide approximately 33km (20 miles) of continuous dual carriageway between Inverness and Slochd.

 

 

Defence

Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO)

Lendlease has been awarded three contracts to upgrade army barracks in Gloucester, the Midlands, and Wales.

The contracts, procured under the Defence Estate Optimisation (DEO) Army Programme by the DIO, include the construction of life, work and train facilities. These are estimated to be worth £450m.

The contracts are part of the Ministry of Defence’s 10-year Strategic Alliance Contract, under which Lendlease and six other tier one firms are delivering the design-and-build elements of the MoD’s 25-year DEO Portfolio programme.

Other major contractors in the alliance include Galliford Try, Graham, ISG, Laing O’Rourke and Morgan Sindall.

 

 

Other

West of England Combined Authority (WECA)

AECOM, AtkinsRéalis, Jacobs, Ramboll, Stantec and WSP have been awarded places on WECA’s new professional services framework, aimed at supporting infrastructure projects in the West of England region.

This framework is in collaboration with Bristol City Council, North Somerset Council, South Gloucestershire Council, and Bath and North East Sommerset Council.

The framework is a renewal of the previous 2018 framework. AECOM, AtkinsRéalis, and WSP were on the previous framework (which expired at the beginning of this year).

They are now joined by Jacobs, Ramboll and Stantec.

The new iteration of the framework will be worth £55m and £112m over four years.
