Commercial & Finance Director

We are looking for a Commercial & Finance Director to develop and implement an industry-leading approach to commercial management for a major collaborative enterprise.

The successful candidate will have effective oversight of the commercial and financial functions for the enterprise. You will be required to operate in a matrix management structure coordinating the commercial activities of the alliance partners and existing individuals from the current client structure.

The Commercial & Finance Director is a member of the Leadership Team and will report into the MD of the enterprise.

This will be the largest deployment of a Project 13 collaborative enterprise in the UK that is in delivery.

This role requires a strong leader who can drive commercial excellence, ensure financial oversight, and collaborate effectively across multiple partners in a dynamic and integrated working environment.

Responsibilities

  • Providing the leadership and management of the commercial and finance function of the enterprise.
  • Ensuring all actions, decisions and behaviours across the portfolio are consistent with ‘best for portfolio’ and aligned to the enterprise’s behavioural charter.
  • Responsible for developing and implementing the commercial strategy for the enterprise along with clear and auditable governance processes and authorities.
  • Develop and maintain the relationship with enterprise auditor.
  • Oversight management of the Enterprise Agreement and ensuring the commercial obligations are met in a timely manner.
  • Ensuring the enterprise financial resources are invested effectively and efficiently.
  • Working with senior colleagues, accountable for the procurement of the ecosystem on appropriate contracting arrangements and managing the negotiation and administration of contracts with the ecosystem at various tiers and at various level of ecosystem partnering arrangements.
  • Developing and implementing the dispute avoidance, management and resolution between the alliance and the ecosystem to protect the alliance outcomes from disputes within the ecosystem.
  • Working with the Business Partner Leads and Operations Director to ensure active management of risks, efficiencies, threats and opportunities throughout the enterprise.
  • Developing and implementing the financial reporting from the alliance partners into the central reporting structure of the alliance and providing the financial reporting back to alliance partners and Capable Owner in a clear, transparent, and auditable manner.
  • Financial health checks and proactive safeguards in relation to the ecosystem.
  • Implementing robust cost interrogation, capture, reporting and forecasting within the alliance partners and the ecosystem to ensure audit compliance.

Requirements

  • Experience and competent in commercial and financial management at a senior level in the Infrastructure sectors, with a successful track record in major multi-million-pound infrastructure programmes.
  • Experience in managing a P&L, financial accounting responsibilities, and applying accounting rules and regulations within a Tier 1 contractor for a significant portfolio of works.
  • Strong ability to engage and manage relationships with stakeholders, ensuring their needs and expectations are met.
  • Skilled in identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks, negotiating contracts with suppliers and subcontractors, and handling complex contractual issues.
  • Experienced in administering various contract forms across construction sectors, bringing best practices and advising on suitable contracting arrangements.
  • Capable of strategic and tactical programme commercial planning, setting standards, providing guidance, and monitoring achievement.
  • Proficient in interrogating project estimates and forecasts at a detailed level to robustly challenge cost estimates and inform business/alliance performance.
  • Ability to think creatively and implement new ideas to improve processes and outcomes.
  • Experienced in delivering a high-performing collaborative culture in programme delivery environments and leading commercial functions in integrated collaborative arrangements.
  • Skilled in planning and executing strategies that align with long-term goals while integrating diverse teams and expertise.
  • Proficiency in analysing data to inform decision-making and improve project performance.
  • Strong leadership skills to guide, motivate, and support teams, with experience in delivering portfolios of construction projects across wide geographical regions within a senior leadership team.

Qualifications

  • Qualified to a degree level as a minimum.
  • Chartered with relevant institution or body is desirable.
