Check out the latest developments across infrastructure. Here’s a roundup of the major contracts awarded in the last month.

Energy

Ofgem and Innovate UK

£9.7m of funding has been awarded under the latest round of Ofgem and Innovate UK’s Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) to support various energy infrastructure projects.

National Grid secured £1.7m for four projects. National Grid Electricity Distribution received £920,000 for projects to support the decarbonisation of rural communities and the construction industry.

SSEN was awarded close to £1m for the SeaChange and Nature4Networks projects.

Other key recipients include Northern Powergrid, UK Power Networks, SP Networks, Electricity North West, and Southern Gas Networks, each securing funding for initiatives aimed at advancing decarbonisation and future-proofing energy systems.

UK Government

Jacobs has been appointed by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero to deliver technical project management support to the UK’s Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage (CCUS) programme.

The government has pledged up to £21.6bn to develop two hubs – East Coast Cluster on Teeside and the HyNet hub in the North West and North Wales.

 

National Grid

National Grid is procuring a £1bn framework to construct overhead power lines and related infrastructure in both the UK and the US.

The tender aims to procure the necessary equipment and, for specific lots, offers opportunities for installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance services.

Those wishing to submit a bid have until the 4th of December.

Scottish Power

The owner of Scottish Power, Spanish firm Iberdrola, has announced that it will double its investment in UK green energy projects to £24bn.

Iberdrola will allocate the majority of the grant to upgrading the UK’s electricity grid, including the Eastern Green Link 1 project – a new subsea energy superhighway designed to transmit renewable energy between Scotland and Energy. 

 

Water                                                             

Southern Water

Southern Water has awarded three companies contracts worth up to £540 million to improve its wastewater network. Lanes Group will be responsible for maintenance and manholes workstreams, Cappagh Browne will deliver on sewer rehabilitation projects, and McAllister Bros will work on sewer sealing.

The contracts start in April 2025, with a potential five-year extension.

 

Anglian Water

Anglian Water has named the four contractors on their £200m Integrated Maintenance and Repair (IMR) alliance delivering work across AMP8: Clancy Docwra, Claret Civil Engineering, Danaher & Walsh, and Public Sewer Services.

The companies selected will handle water and sewer infrastructure maintenance, including leak repairs and sewer system fixes, as part of a 15-year programme that includes performance reviews every five years.

Initial supply chain contracts begin in April 2025 and are expected to run until 2030, with a review every five years.

 

Northern Ireland Water

Northern Ireland Water (NI Water) has awarded contracts valued at £800m to design, plan and build water and wastewater infrastructure under its capital works framework.

The framework will run for an initial four-year term, with options to extend to 2032.

Companies that have been awarded contracts include AtkinsRéalis, McAdam Design, Tetra Tech Consulting NI, WSP, AECOM, Doran Consulting, Turner Townsend Cost Management, Jacobs, Mott MacDonald, Ove Arup and Partners, RPS Ireland, Stantec, Chandler KBS and OutForm Consulting.

Sydney Water

A Jacobs Seymour Whyte joint venture has secured a contract from Sydney Water to provide Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management services for the Upper South Creek Networks Program in Western Sydney.

 

Rail

Transport for London

  • Transport for London have chosen AECOM and Weston Williamson & Partners (WWP) to carry out an eighth-month feasibility study for four proposed new stations as part of the Bakerloo Line Extension project. The new stations are Burgess Park, Old Kent Road, New Cross Gate, and Lewisham. WW+P is lead architect for the project and will focus on the design aspects. AECOM will be responsible for all engineering matters.
  • Transport for London has awarded Dragados UK a contract for the design and construction of new passenger tunnels at Elephant & Castle Tube station. These tunnels will link the new station box to the existing Northern line platforms and overbridge. Work on excavating the tunnels will start next year and is due to be completed in 2027.
  • Transport for London has renewed KeolisAmey’s contract to operate and maintain the DLR for a further eight years. The new franchise is due to start on the 1 April 2025.

 

Network Rail

Two rail bridges in Glasgow are planned to be demolished and replaced as part of Network Rail’s £140 million East Kilbride enhancement project, aimed at decarbonising passenger services.

Contractors SPL Powerlines, Story Contracting, AmcoGiffen, Siemens and QTS are delivering the works for the enhancement project as part of a wider Scottish Government investment to decarbonise railway passenger services.

 

Iarnród Eireann (Irish Rail)

AtkinsRéalis has been appointed by Iarnród Eireann as a multi-disciplinary consultant to provide design services for the DART+ West and South West rail improvement projects.  

 

Hafeet Rail

Hafeet Rail, the developer and operator of the Omani-Emirati railway network, has chosen SYSTRA to provide project and engineering consultancy services for the $2.5bn mega project linking UAE’s national railway network to Sohar Port in Oman.

Highways

Lower Thames Crossing

The DCO decision on the Lower Thames Crossing has been delayed. A written ministerial statement (WMS) to Parliament from transport secretary Louise Haigh set a new deadline of 23 May 2025 to determine the scheme’s development consent order.

 

Buckinghamshire Council

Galliford Try has been awarded a £88.9 million contract to build a 1.8km dual carriageway that will form part of the Orbital Link Road around Aylesbury. The work will include three new roundabouts, a new bridge across the railway and the dual carriageway.

 

Transport Scotland

Further progress has been made on the A9 Dualling programme; a new ground investigation contract worth £635,000 has been awarded to Soil Engineering Geoservices.

This contract will focus on the Tay Crossing to Ballinluig and Pitlochry to Killiecrankie sections of the A9, part of the broader scheme to dual 133km of the road between Perth and Inverness.

Aviation

Department for Transport and Manchester Airports Group (MAG)

London Stansted Airport is to receive £1.1bn of funding from MAG to support its expansion plans.

The investment programme was announced at the Government’s International Investment Summit on the 14th of October, while planning permission for the expansion was granted October last year.

Transport secretary Louise Haigh said the funding is being provided by the airport owner Manchester Airports Group. This will be over a five-year period and will see £600m going to expand the airport’s terminal and £500m being used to improve the existing terminal and wider airport estate.

 

Defence

Ministry of Defence

Babcock has been awarded a two-year extension by the MOD to continue to provide technical support services across the armed forces.

This extension will see Babcock continue to deliver a range of critical services to the RAF, Joint Aviation Command and Strategic Command at 16 stations across the UK.

 

Ports

Associated British Ports

ABP has announced a tender opportunity for a £50m design and build contract on its Future Port Talbot programme.

The winning contractor will design and build a new access road, deliver the preparation of a construction logistics zone, sand quarry restoration and site levelling.

The contract is expected to last for 14 months and is not subject to renewal. Deadline for submitting a bid is the 4th of November.
