Movers and shakers is back and what a way for us to kick off the new year! January always seems to be a popular month to make a career move and there’s been some big shake-ups in the transport and infrastructure sectors this month.
Here to kick off the new year, these are the latest movers and shakers…
Highways England
Highways England has recently announced that Executive Director of Operations Nick Harris will become interim Chief Executive next month. He will succeed Jim O’Sullivan who is set to depart at the beginning of February.
Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy
Anne-Marie Trevelyan has recently been announced as the new Construction Minister following just a month after the appointment of Kwasi Kwarteng, who has now been promoted to Business Secretary.
Galliford Try
David Lowery has been poached from the Effiage / Kier / Ferrovial / BAM HS2 JV. He joins Galliford Try as the firm’s new Infrastructure Business Operations Director where he will be responsible for the relationship with Highways England.
Simon Courtney has also recently been promoted from Area Director to Managing Director of Building in the West Midlands and South West.
Breedon
James Haluch has recently been appointed as Managing Director of Breedon’s GB Contracting business starting in March, he leaves Amey after 5 years as Managing Director of Highways & Waste collections.
Balfour Beatty
Following a re-structure within the Balfour’s UK Construction Services business former HS2 Commercial Director Beth West will be leaving her role of MD Region South. It is understood there are several other senior execs also departing UKCS.
Briggs & Forrester
Mike Stanton has recently announced his retirement after nearly 38 years at the M&E firm, his will be replaced by current Chief Executive Paul Burton who will be taking on the role of chairman in addition to his current role of CEO.
Jeremy Askew has recently been appointed as Group Finance Director, he leaves his interim role as Head of Accounting (Customers) at Drax Group.
Turner & Townsend
Spencer Knight has been appointed as a Director at Turner & Townsend, he was formerly Head of Programme Planning & Schedule Management at Mace.
Keltbray
Keltbray has recently recruited Multiplex’s Project Commercial Director Jason Gibbons as Commercial Director for their Built Environment division.
Veitch Lister Consulting
Mott MacDonald’s Technical Director and modelling expert Tom Van Vuren is leaving his role after 21 years to join Australian transport planning business VLC. He will be heading their UK development.
PJA
Transport planning and engineering consultancy PJA has appointed Mike Salter as Director of the firms new Cambridge office. He leaves Mott MacDonald where he had been Transport Planning Projects Director since 2017 and City Director since 2020.
London Technical Advisors Group
London Borough of Enfield’s group leader for traffic and transportation Dominic Millen has taken over as chair of LoTAG following previous chair Mark Frost’s recent departure.
Nottingham City Transport
NCT’s current Managing Director Mark Fowles is set to retire in April, David Astill will succeed him after recently being appointed as NCT’s new Managing Director.
EKFB
Civil Engineering JV EKFB has recently appointed Peter Bimson as the new Project Director. His promotion from Deputy Project Director follows after Effiage’s David Lowery left the role earlier this month to join Galliford Try.
Kier Construction
David McKenzie will be joining Kier in February as Managing Director of its Regional Building London business. He leaves his role at AECOM where he has been COO for its Europe, Middle East & Africa Construction Services business since 2013.
Homes England
Chief Executive Nick Walkley has recently announced plans to leave the agency in February. Walkley has been CEO of the then-Homes and Communities Agency since March 2017.

Lee Marks will be joining nmcn as its new Chief Executive, he leaves NG Bailey where he has been Group Commercial Director since 2013. The official start date is yet to be announced but is expected to be sometime before June.
McLaren
David Murphy leaves McLaren and his role as South and Midlands Group Managing Director after 11 years for a new challenge.
East West Railway
Duncan Wilkes has recently joined EWR as their new Commercial Director, he leaves his 13-year career at Network Rail where he was most recently Project Director, Thameslink Programme Close Out.
Hitachi Rail
Ex-TfW Rolling Stock Director Sara Holland has recently been appointed as Fleet Director UK East at Hitachi Rail.
Stagecoach Manchester
Stagecoach Manchester has recently appointed Lee Wasnidge as their new Managing Director. He succeeds Elisabeth Tasker who has recently retired. Lee leaves his role as Customer Service and Security Director at MAG.
SWARCO
SWARCO Traffic has recently appointed John Pickworth as its new Managing Director, John succeeds Berony Abraham who has been MD for the past two years.
L&Q
Developer and housing association L&Q has recently promoted Fiona Fletcher-Smith (former Group Director of Development and Sales) as their new Chief Executive, she succeeds David Montague who announced his departure last September.
Aggregate Industries
Andy Swinnerton has been recently announced as Managing Director of the Aggregates business unit. Andy joined Aggregate Industries in 2016 and succeeds Alan Barrett who unfortunately passed away last year.

Neil Garwood has recently been appointed as CEO after his 10-year career at Southampton Airport where he was most recently Managing Director.
British Board of Agrément
After 16 years with Costain, Bill Hewlett leaves his role as Technical Director at Costain to join the BBA’s newly created Technical Director post.

RAC Foundation Director Steve Gooding has recently been announced as the new President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport for 2021.
