In transport and infrastructure, we saw the East Coast Rail taken into government control, the Wales and Borders franchise, the biggest ever contract to be let in Wales, was awarded to KeolisAmey and talks that Swansea Bay’s Tidal Lagoon is to be scrapped.
But who are the big movers and shakers this month?
Network Rail
Civil Aviation Authority boss Andrew Haines has been named as Network Rail’s new Chief Executive, taking over from Mark Carne. Before joining the CAA, Haines held roles including MD at South West Trains and MD of the rail division for First Group. He is expected to take up his new role in early autumn.
KBR
Simon Scott joins as Director of Advisory Services. He leaves PA Consulting Group where he was a Director.
WSP
Have strengthened its transport and infrastructure team with two new senior appointments. David Stephens, formerly with CH2M, has joined as Head of Local Government and Adrian Malone has been appointed as Head of Digital Project Delivery and BIM, leaving Atkins.
Align JV
Daniel Altier is replacing Jérôme Furgé as Project Director on the Align JV, consisting of Bouygues, Sir Robert McAlpine and VolkerFitzpatrick, working on HS2’s £965m Chiltern tunnels to Colne Valley viaduct package. Altier most recently oversaw the LianTang tunnel mega‐project in Hong Kong. Furgé is now UK Business Development Director.
Meridian
Derek Turner CBE, former Deputy Chief Executive of the Highways Agency, has been appointed as Chair of the Meridian board.
Stagecoach
Have announced a new senior team for its UK bus division with the creation of a business change team. Clare Burles will lead the new team as UK Bus Business Change Director. She joins from Virgin Trains East Coast where she is People Director.
Also joining the team is Michelle Hargreaves and Darren Roe. Hargreaves is currently Stagecoach East Midlands Managing Director, she will lead on people, wellbeing, and employee engagement. Roe will become Programme Lead for Safety and Engineering.
Other changes within the bus division include; Cumbria & North Lancashire MD Matthew Cranwell will become MD of East Midlands. North Scotland MD, Mark Whitelocks will take over as MD for Cumbria & North Lancashire.
Chris Remnant, currently MD for the South has been appointed Engineering Director for London and Steve Burd MD for Midlands is leaving in September after ten years with the business.
Van Elle
Have appointed Balfour Beatty’s Mark Cutler as its new Chief Executive to replace Jon Fenton who announced he was stepping down last November. Cutler, who was the Managing Director of the Balfour Beatty / Vinci HS2 JV, will take up the post no later than October this year.
Jacobs
Have appointed Mark Southwell as Director of their European rail and geotechnical team. He has been European Operations Director for the south and Global Director for Rail and Transit at CH2M since 2016.
Tarmac
Andy Brown has been appointed as Director of Infrastructure. He was previously Carillion’s Civil Engineering Managing Director for the six months prior to the contractor’s liquidation.
Costain
Helen Simms, leaves waste management firm Augean to join Costain as its Capability Director for Consultancy.
Stepnell
Have appointed former BAM Construct MD, Richard Bailey as a Director, tasked with shaping company strategy.
GB Railfreight
Have announced that Duncan Clark, Director of Strategic Development has been appointed to the Rail Freight Group Board of Directors after 3 years with the company.
Bombardier
Anna Hojer takes on the role of Head of the Nordics and Managing Director for Sweden. She joined Bombardier as Head of Sales and Marketing, Nordics in 2017.
DfT
Guy Boulby has joined as Head of Cycling and Walking. He succeeds Helen Ramsden who has moved to the Ministry of Housing.
Go North East
Have appointed Martijn Gilbert as Managing Director. He succeeds Kevin Carr who is retiring. Gilbert joins from Reading Buses where he was Chief Executive.
Arriva
Abhay Jeet Majithia joins Arriva as Group Strategy Director. He leaves Amcor where he was Director of Corporate Strategy & Business Development.
