The Company

The Brief

As part of their growth strategy, Teneo wanted to grow their management consulting business’ presence in the global aviation market, advising airports, airlines, and investors. They were looking to recruit a Senior Managing Director to cultivate this sector of the business.

At the time, Teneo had a strong management consulting capability in the rail sector, and had also worked across transport infrastructure deal advisory, bus sector and some airport projects. Their Communications Advisory division had worked with major airlines and supported Heathrow Airport on its campaign to secure government backing for a third runway.

Teneo wanted to leverage their existing relationships with aviation clients and grow the Management Consulting business in this space.

The successful candidate would need to have extensive experience within the aviation industry and a large network of senior individuals across the market. They would need to be highly credible individuals that were able to develop relationships and discuss strategic issues with CEO’s and leaders of major airlines, airports, supply chain businesses and government agencies.

As a senior leader within the business, they would also need to act as role models and provide mentoring to junior members of the team.

This role could be based from the UK or North America and would require extensive travel.

The Process

The candidate pool for this role was extremely tight given the seniority and specialism. To begin with the team put together a list of strategy and management consultancies with aviation practices, in the UK and North America. From there senior Directors were identified and approached.  

To ensure that all relevant individuals were uncovered, we utilised industry conferences thought leadership pieces and extensive networking of our contact base. One of the main challenges for this opportunity was the lack of familiarity with the brand. It was important to actively promote Teneo as a company and provide a detailed candidate brief that sold the business to those who weren’t as familiar with the name.

Teneo are an entrepreneurial and progressive business that have experienced a huge amount of rapid growth, so once we gardened interested, they were an easy business to sell.

The Result

Five senior leaders were shortlisted from a range of backgrounds. The successful candidate was placed from EasyJet and also had considerable experience at McKinsey &Co.  so was able to bring the expertise and contact base that was required to succeed as Aviation Managing Director.
