4wayConsulting were looking to recruit a Technical Director to grow their technologyconsulting capability. The successful candidate would work closely with NationalHighways and Local Authorities, advising how digital solutions can be utilisedto improve the road network and increase efficiency.
Theyhad never used an executive search firm before and spoke with six executivesearch firms about delivering this role for them. After several meetings toassess our knowledge of the market, approach, and chemistry with theirmanagement team we were selected to undertake the search.
4wayConsulting’s core business was coming from engineering & design work forHighways Contractors, National Highways and Local Authorities. So, thiscandidate was to be responsible for significantly developing the technologyconsulting business.
Tobe successful in this role, candidates would need to be technically credibleexperts in the field of ITS, who were also capable of building strong clientrelationships. Alongside this, they would also need to be comfortable joining aclose-knit management team.
To findtechnical experts in this space, the research focused on ITS consultancies,management consultancies with a transport technology practice, and transporttechnology product businesses.
Candidatesneeded to have experience of leading digital consulting projects within thehighways sector, whilst having business development and business strategyresponsibilities.
As an area ofemerging technology and development, 4Way wanted to find someone that was ableto provide innovative solutions for their clients. One of the main challengeswe came up against for this role was identifying which candidates had this indepth understanding of innovative digital solutions as opposed to traditionalITS design and engineering.
To uncover thisinformation, interested individuals were approached and assessed across fourleadership competencies: building collaboration & partnerships, creativity& innovation, results orientation and developing strategy. This allowed usto provide an interview score based on tangible demonstrable abilities, whichalongside a two-page candidate report, gave the client the tools to make aninformed decision on who to interview.
