Morgan Sindall Energy Director

Morgan Sindall needed to recruit an Energy Director for England and Wales. This role was responsible for leading the P&L and success of the Energy sector across England and Wales.

The Client

Morgan Sindall employs 6,900 people working across their 8 businesses; Morgan Sindall Construction, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, BakerHicks, Overbury, Morgan Lovell, Morgan Sindall Property Services, Lovell Partnerships and Muse Developments.

The Energy Director role was a key leadership position within Morgan Sindall Infrastructure.

The Brief

Morgan Sindall needed to recruit an Energy Director for England and Wales. This role was responsible for leading the P&L and success of the Energy sector across England and Wales.

Morgan Sindall had recently secured several long-term frameworks with National Grid and were also looking to diversify their offering for the future. Their ambition to grow the division made it an exciting time to join the business.

Candidates needed to have significant experience within a regulated framework contracting environment, (such as rail, water, gas, highways, telecoms). Energy sector experience was desirable but not essential.

The successful individual would have the capability to manage and grow a P&L of £100m+ with strong leadership, business development and organisational development skills.

The Process

Initial research focused on identifying companies that had won projects and frameworks in the Energy sector to find direct competitors in this market. The net was then extended to include companies in the wider regulated infrastructure space.

Candidates with strong operational management experience in these areas were longlisted and feedback from the client was taken into consideration before approaching prioritised individuals.

Candidates were assessed through competency-based interviews across four key competencies; delivering change, leading others, developing strategy and communication, influencing & impact.

The main challenge for this role was that at the time, just coming out of the pandemic, it was a very ‘candidate led’ market and we found that lots of candidates were either in the process of moving job or being promoted within their current companies. As a result, the number of suitable candidates at that level of seniority was tight. It was important to exhaust all of our networking contacts to uncover any hidden gems.

Our team identified over 100 strong candidates for this role, with 9 being interviewed internally and 6 candidates being recommend on the shortlist.

The Outcome

The successful candidate was a highly experienced Director, with over 18 years’ Tier 1 contracting experience in the Energy sector. For the client, this result was excellent.
